Diriyah is the capital of the First Saudi State, which was established in 1745 CE (1158H). It is still an area of beauty and grandeur: the city of steadfastness. It was the political stronghold of the First Saudi State, located 21 miles (35km) on the northwestern outskirts of the Saudi capital Riyadh, sitting on Wadi Hanifa. It is the Kingdom’s second UNESCO World Heritage Site with plenty to explore including the Al-Turaif quarter, which was the seat of government and original home of the Al-Saud Family. This district has many magnificent buildings to see including palaces and the mud-brick buildings unique to the region.
This old town with so much history to explore was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010. It is surrounded by a wall and overlooks the other districts in Diriyah. The beautiful Salwa Palace was built by the founder of the First Saudi State in the middle of the 18th century CE. You can also see the Imam Muhammad bin Saud Mosque with many other architectural treasures that are unique examples of the Najdi style of architecture. Enjoy gardens, cafes and heritage markets in this culturally significant and historic district.
Diriyah is known for its picturesque natural landscape, abundant tributaries and fertile lands which have created t stunning scenery.
